Minister Commits Suicide Over Coronavirus

A 54-year-old German finance minister of Germany’s Hesse state, Thomas Schaefer, has committed suicide apparently after becoming “deeply worried” over how to cope with the economic fallout from the coronavirus.

According to state premier Volker Bouffier on Sunday, Schaefer, was found dead near a railway track on Saturday.

However, the Wiesbaden prosecution’s office said they believe he died by suicide.

Bouffier said in a recorded statement;

We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all we are immensely sad.

Before his death, Hesse was a home to Germany’s financial capital Frankfurt, where major lenders like Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank have their headquarters. The European Central Bank is also located in Frankfurt.

US Announces N2.6 Billion Emergency Health Aid To Nigeria

Nigeria as of Saturday had a total of 81 confirmed cases and one death from COVID-19, whose global infection and fatality figures stood at no fewer than half a million and 26,000 respectively.

US Announces N2.6 Billion Emergency Health Aid To Nigeria

As part of a 274 million dollars (N103 billion) assistance package to no fewer than 63 countries affected by the disease, according to a statement by the Department of States on Friday.

The United States Government has announced a 7 million dollars (about N2.6 billion) emergency health and humanitarian aid to Nigeria amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The statement said, Nigeria’s share, will go into funding of “risk communication, water and sanitation activities, infection prevention, and coordination’’.

It said;

This assistance joins more than 5.2 billion dollars (N1.9 trillion) in U.S. health assistance and more than 8.1 billion dollars (N3trillion) in total assistance for Nigeria over the past 20 years.

Following announcement of World Health Organisation statistics as of 12:00 pm on Friday, which 63,570 people have been infected with coronavirus and nearly 884 have died in the US which is quickly becoming the new epicenter of the outbreak.

In the midst of the increasing cases of the virus, the United States has asked medical professionals seeking to work in America to apply for a work visa at the nearest US Embassy as part of measures to strengthen the health system to contain the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

According to the government, in a statement published on www.travel.state.gov on Friday, it advised foreign medical professionals already in the US to consult with their sponsors to extend their programmes.

The statement read;

We encourage medical professionals seeking to work in the United States on a work or exchange visitor, particularly those working to treat or mitigate the effects of COVID-19, to reach out to the nearest embassy or consulate to request a visa appointment.

For those foreign medical professionals already in the United States:

J-1 Alien Physicians (medical residents) may consult with their programme sponsor, ECFMG, to extend their programmes in the United States. Generally, a J-1 program for a foreign medical resident can be extended one year at a time for up to seven years.

The statement, also noted that the expiration date on a US visa did not determine how long one can be in the United States.

Though the US is behind China with almost 1,300 Covid-19-related fatalities, with China having 3,291, and Italy 8,215.

This is becoming as President Donald Trump predicted the nation would get back to work "pretty quickly".
