A late direct free-kick from Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez was enough to take Algeria through to Friday's CAN 2019 final where they face Senegal at the Cairo International Stadium.

The Super Eagles had managed to claw themselves back into a tie via the penalty spot in a game where they were outclassed by the Desert Foxes for large spells before Real Betis defender Mandi handled in the area after a Etebo speculative drive.

The Zambian match official consulted VAR and it appears that any hand in the area, however innocuous, unintentional etc is now deemed to be worthy of a spot kick. Ighalo dispatched the penalty and gave some hope to a Nigeria side lacking creative sparkle up until that point.

Oghenekaro Etebo fired a long-range effort which was blocked by Aissa Mandi, however, after referee Bakary Papa Gassama consulted with the VAR, Mandi was adjudged to have handled the ball in his area.

The Super Eagles were awarded a penalty and Odion Ighalo dispatched his effort from the spot to bring the Super Eagles back into contention.

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr introduced Galatasaray forward Henry Onuekuru for Chukwueze in the 78th minute as the Super Eagles searched for the winning goal.

In additional time, Manchester City winger Mahrez scored the decisive goal with a well-taken free-kick to help the Desert Foxes into the final.

The Desert Foxes will slug it out with Senegal in the final of the continental competition at Cairo International Stadium on Friday.

Odegbami made this known in an interview with the our source in Ota, Ogun.

He noted that the Super Eagles needed to listen to their coach and technical crew as the match between them and the Desert Foxes of Algeria “would be hard.”

“Our success when the Green Eagles played against Algeria in the final of the 1980 Nations Cup that we won by 3-0 should inspire the present Super Eagles to victory.” he said.

The ex-international, however, advised the Super Eagles to fight from the beginning to the end of the match against the Desert Foxes ” as it would be a difficult one.”

It was reported that Odegbami, who played for the Green Eagles in the finals of the 1980 Cup of Nations, scored two goals against Algeria.

Breaking: Nigeria book semi-finals ticket at 2019 AFCON
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have progressed to the semi-final of the ongoing Africa Nations Cup (AFCON) in Egypt with 2-1 defeat of South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.

Samuel Chukwueze opened scoring for Nigeria on 27th minute. Chukwueze was in the right place at the right time to get to the rebound inside the box and gleefully rifled the ball low inside the left post to make it 1-0 for Nigeria.

On 42nd minute, Chukwueze went on a weaving run through the defence and got within shooting range but his effort was blocked.

Oghenekaro Etebo, on 51st minute took a mid-range free kick, but Ronwen Williams stopped the ball from reaching the top left corner by tipping it onto the post, it was a great save.

On 60th minute, a through ball from Ahmed Musa failed to reach Odion Ighalo as one of the defending players reacted brilliantly to intercept the effort. If the pass had been produced a little bit earlier, Ighalo could have got into a promising position.

Bongani Zungu made it 1-1 for South Africa on 71st minute. He lashed onto the rebound near the penalty spot, and he produced a fantastic header which went inside the right post.

The linesman had ruled out the goal but VAR gave it to South Africa.

William Troost-Ekong sealed the deal for the Eagles in the 89th minute following Moses Simon crossing from a resulting corner which dropped in a free space before finding the net to make it 2-1 for Nigeria.

The Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO) has hailed the Super Eagles for their resilience in the tension soaked match against Cameroon in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
AFCON: NLO Hails Super Eagles’ Resilience

Freshreporters News earlier reported that the Super Eagles came from behind, after taking the lead, to beat Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions 3-2 and advance to the quarter-finals of 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

A Director in the NLO Board, Ebere Amaraizu, told NAN on Saturday in Enugu shortly after the match that the Super Eagles had a magnificent comeback into the tournament after their awful last group match against Madagascar.

Amaraizu noted that the team played in a coordinated manner and they put up a good fighting spirit today.

According to him, they have put in lots of effort and determination in the match, even when the Cameroon fought very hard throughout the game.

“The NLO Board join all well-meaning Nigerians and lovers of football in the World to congratulate the Super Eagles for defeating the defending champions, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

“The match had cleared the doubt most people have over the Super Eagles flying very high again in the tournament.

“They had made our weekend worthwhile and put smiles in the faces and hearts of millions of Nigerians once more,’’ he said.

Amaraizu, who also is the General Manager of Crime Busters FC, Enugu, noted that the NLO would continue on its “fervent support’’ and prayers for the senior national team in the tournament.

It was recalled that the Super Eagles led until the 41st minute, through an Odion Ighalo goal, before being pegged back and going behind within three minutes by two consecutive goals from the Indomitable Lions.

However, goals from Ighalo and Alex Iwobi within three minutes after the hour restored the Nigerian side’s lead and gave them the important 3 – 2 win.

With the favourable result, Nigeria will now on Wednesday meet the winners of the fixture between hosts Egypt and South Africa, which will be played later on Saturday.

AFCON last 16: Madagascar president charters plane for fans
Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina has chartered a special plane to take football fans to Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations after the country unexpectedly qualified for the round of 16.

Excitement has been building in the Indian Ocean island nation as the team emerged top of group B after beating three-time tournament winners Nigeria 2-0.

“Barea”, who take their nickname from a breed of local cattle, now play DR Congo on Sunday for a place in the semi-final.

“After hearing the demands of supporters, President Andry Rajoelina and the Madagascan state have decided to mobilise an Airbus 380, with 480 seats, to transport supporters,” Rinah Rakotomanga, communications chief for the presidency, told AFP.

The flight will leave Antananarivo on Saturday and return immediately after the game.

But the adventure will not be for free — tickets cost about $600 (530 euros) including the flight, a seat at the match and meals.

Rajoelina had announced that he would attend the match, sparking a campaign to enable other fans to travel.

“Do not go alone to Egypt President Andry Rajoelina, there are supporters who are ready to fill a plane and the empty stadium,” said former opposition MP Guy Rivo Randrianarisoa on social media.

Madagascar will face a tough game at the weekend — they are ranked 108th in the world, with DR Congo far above them in 49th spot.

“Barea’s participation is historic,” said Jean Josue Njakasolo, 38, as he lined up to buy his ticket at an Air Madagascar ticket office.

The price “does not mean anything compared to the honour that our national team gives us,” he said.
