$9.6bn Judgement: Protesters Vow To Occupy UK, Irish Embassies For Seven Days

$9.6bn Judgement: Protesters Vow To Occupy UK, Irish Embassies For Seven Days

Members of a coalition of civil society groups have vowed to occupy the United Kingdom and Irish embassies for the next one week to demand the reversal of $9.6bn judgement debt against Nigeria.

The protesters said they would not vacate the premises of the embassies until the judgement was set aside.

The protesters had on Monday in Abuja besieged the two embassies demanding for the review of the judgement in favour of Process and Industrial Development, an Irish firm.

President of the group, Etuk Williams, said that Nigeria cannot be colonised and enslaved for the second time through the judgment, adding that it is capable of impoverishing over 200 million citizens.

Williams said, “We have come to say that we will not submit to slavery. We believe in justice, $9.6bn in UK is a fraud.

That judgment will inflict pain on over 200 million Nigerian people and we cannot take that.

“We are ready to occupy this place for another one week. We will continue to occupy British and Irish embassies until justice is done. This judgement must be reversed.”

Williams added that the $9.6bn is equivalent to N3.5trn when converted adding that the amount would take 20 per cent of Nigeria's foreign reserve.

He stated, “We recognise and appreciate the cordial relationship that has existed between the Britain and Nigerian Government.

“We urge the parties to review the contract and negotiate the payment awarded against Nigeria.”
Kperogi Farooq Reacts To Buhari's Appointment Of Amina Zakari's Brother As Minister, Son As Special Adviser

Kperogi Farooq Reacts To Buhari's Appointment Of Amina Zakari's Brother As Minister, Son As Special Adviser

Farooq Kperogi, an activist, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of nepotism in the appointment of key figures in his administration.

Kperogi Farooq Reacts To Buhari's Appointment Of Amina Zakari's Brother As Minister, Son As Special Adviser

Kperogi in a tweet on Sunday said that Buhari appointed Ahmed Zakari, son of controversial head of election collation, Amina Zakari as special adviser on infrastructure as well as Suleiman Adamu, as Minister of Water Resources.

In the build up to the 2019 general elections, Zakari's biological relationship with the President came under public scrutiny after sources revealed they were related.

Zakari went on to head the collation of the 2019 general elections.

Kperogi alleged that the appointments were made by Buhari to thank Zakari for her role in manipulating the elections.

He said, “Buhari’s new Special Assistant on infrastructure is INEC’s Amina Zakari’s son.

“When people objected to the appointment of Zakari as head of INEC’s committee that would be in charge of the secretariat for collation of results of the last presidential election, both the presidency and Zakari lied that Buhari and Zakari had no family relationship until I exposed this in January 5, 2019.

“Well, many people don’t seem to notice that Buhari has compensated Zakari for helping him to rig the 2019 election.

“As I pointed out in January 5, 2019, at some point in his youth, Buhari, who lost his father at a young age, came under the guardianship of Zakari’s father, the late Alhaji Hussaini Adamu.

“Buhari continues to nurture his relationship with the Hussaini Adamu family.

“The appointment of Zakari’s son to an utterly purposeless position isn’t just a reward for her help in perpetrating unexampled electoral fraud on Buhari’s behalf, it’s also a continuation of Buhari’s bald-faced nepotism.”

Lawyer Sues EFCC, Demands ₦20m Damages

The Ilorin Zonal office of EFCC on Wednesday accused the lawyer of forging court documents to defraud one Pastor Adetunji Adedoyin of his property valued at N20m.

The EFCC had also claimed that Aluko was still at large and was looking for him to face interrogation with other lawyers allegedly involved in the fraud.

However, Aluko, alongside his client, Taiye Suyuti Na’Allah, on Thursday approached the State High Court, seeking redress and claiming ₦20m as damages.

He also joined Adedoyin as a co-respondent in the suit which has been assigned to Justice Hammed Gegele of the state high court.

Aluko, who said that he was not at large as the EFCC had never sent him an invitation to interrogate him on the alleged property, expressed disappointment over the operation of the anti-graft agency.

“I was highly surprised and disappointed over the EFCC operation. Many people have been calling me that I have been declared wanted over allegation of fraud in which some lawyers were arrested.

“I have never in my life been involved in fraud. The EFCC has never called me on phone or invited me personally or give me notice to come to their office in respect of the allegation made by one Engr Adedoyin, who is now a pastor.

Details Of Buhari, Abe’s Meeting In Japan Released

President Muhammadu Buhari today in Yokohama, Japan, called for the support of the Asian government in combating piracy in the Gulf of Guinea as well as illegal fishing in that region.

Buhari made this request at a bilateral meeting between the Nigerian delegation and Japanese officials led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, on the margins of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7).

According to a statement by Femi Adesina, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, President Buhari praised Mr. Abe for inviting him to attend the triennial forum while thanking the Japanese government for attending the pioneer celebration of June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria.

On his part, Prime Minister Abe welcomed President Buhari’s participation at TICAD7 and also the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement by the country.

Commending Buhari administration for taking Nigeria to the Next Level, Mr Abe pledged a $300,000 support for Nigeria’s Defence College as well as 12 million Yen for the country’s public health sector.

He also pledged his country’s support for Nigeria’s Presidency of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, while seeking Nigeria’s support for Japan’s bid to occupy some global positions.

In a related development, Nigeria and the European Union also signed a €50 million Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Yokohama to support humanitarian and development efforts in the country’s North East region.

The cooperation agreement which was signed by Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama and EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Mr Neven Mimica, would bring the total EU support to the country to €562million for 2014-2020.

President Buhari, who thanked the EU member states for their support especially for the North East, described as “pathetic the situation in internally displaced camps.”

He also called for further assistance to improve youth education in the region to take them out of poverty.

Commissioner Mimica said Nigeria’s request for enhanced assistance would be given priority consideration since it had come at the time that the EU was in the process of preparing its seven-year budget.

Just In: Court Frees Jonathan’s Ex-Aide, Dudafa Of All Corruption Charges

The former Senior Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Domestic Affairs, Waripamo-Owei Dudafa, and a banker, Joseph Iwuejo, who were accused of stealing N1.6bn fraud have been freed of all corruption charges.

In a 190-page judgment, Justice Mohammed Idris held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) failed to prove any of the 22-count charge beyond reasonable doubt against Owei-Dudafa and a Heritage Bank worker Joseph Iwejuo.

He said the anti-graft agency’s case was “based on suspicions” but that suspicions “cannot take the place of legal evidence”.

Justice Idris also observed that the EFCC failed to call vital witnesses, including Jonathan and former NSA Sambo Dasuki, who could have helped its case.

The judge noted that a particular vital witness, Sompre Omeibi, who could have linked the defendants to the offences, was not summoned to testify.

Why did the prosecution fail to call Sompre Omiebi to testify?” the judge wondered.

The court also dismissed the EFCC’s claim that the bags delivered by Dudafa to Jonathan contained dollars.

Justice Idris held that there was no proof for that.

How did the prosecution know that the bags contained dollars?” the judge wondered again.

He said the Prosecution failed to carry out proper investigation.

We’re In Trouble, Galadima Says As He Accuses Buhari Of ‘Caging’ Judiciary, NASS

We’re In Trouble, Galadima Says As He Accuses Buhari Of ‘Caging’ Judiciary, NASS

A former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council, Buba Galadima, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of controlling the judiciary and ‘owning’ the National Assembly.

He made the statement during a programme on Channels Television.

Galadima said it is a well known fact that some of Buhari’s friends visit some judges to sway court cases in their favour.

Galadima faulted Buhari for not signing the Electoral Amendment Bill despite being passed by the National Assembly weeks before the 2019 general election.

He alleged that the refusal to append his signature was a deliberate ploy by the Presidency to rig the poll, a situation that led to a face-off between the executive and legislature.

He said, “This government is intimidating the judiciary. You have heard in the social and print media of certain friends of this government visiting judges, trying to mould their opinion on the cases before them.

“We have the head of a government who believes that he will first accuse you and it will be your duty to prove yourself innocent.

“There is no place, no country in the world where you are accused and you prove yourself innocent.

“The President has consistently stood on this promise and now that he has the complete judiciary under his armpit and the National Assembly inside his pocket, we Nigerians are in trouble.”

JUST IN: I Don't Have The Right To Hear Sowore's Application, Says Judge

A federal high court sitting has declined to hear the motion filed by Sowore as the court referred the matter back to the vacation judge Justice Taiwo Taiwo.

Justice Nkweonye Maha in Abuja high court said she did not have the authority to review the decision by Justice Taiwo Taiwo.

She further noted that the ruling of the vacation judge stated the matter would be held 45 days September 21.

The judge said she had no authority to proceed or review the judgment of her colleagues and that she would like to preserve the order of the court.

In his argument Sowore's lawyer, Femi Falana, argued that in line with order 26 of the federal high court procedure stated that anybody who is affected by an ex parte order can approach the same court to set aside such order. See ONOGORUWA VS  IGP.

He submitted that Sowore's application was bordered on a violation of human rights and the judge (Maha) had the right to hear and review the previous order.

Falana said the judge would do justice to the case by hearing it, adding that the applicant was unnecessarily being punished in detention. He, therefore, made an oral application for bail of the applicant.

But the judge held that the matter be referred to the vacation judge and said that there was nothing before her to  grant the bail application.

Wadume: APC Disowns Kidnap Kingpin, Says He Didn’t Get N13m From Party

Wadume: APC Disowns Kidnap Kingpin, Says He Didn’t Get N13m From Party

The ruling All Progressive Party (APC) has disowned the kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Bala aka Wadume and also denied the claim by him that he received N13m from the party to prosecute the 2019 presidential elections.
Wadume: Apc Disowns Kidnap Kingpin, Says He Didn’t Get N13m From Party
In an interview with Vanguard, the suspect, who claimed to be a political thug and not a kidnapper had accused the party of giving him N13m during the general elections but spent only N7m.

However, the ruling party has in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu reacted to Wadume’s claims, asking him to name his sponsor, adding that the party would never allocate money to kidnappers and murderers.

The statement reads; “It is expected that the alleged kidnapper, having come face to face with justice, would throw whatever he could lay his hands on into the fray.

“In any case, our party did not have budget for thugs. Unlike the period when the ruling party dipped hands into the public treasury to fund political campaigns and elections, APC had to rely on its own resources.

“Even if we had all the money, we would never allocate money for kidnappers and murderers. That era ended with PDP.

“Perhaps, he can name whoever gave him money. Definitely, it was not APC.”

Meanwhile, investigation has been concluded by the seven-man panel set up to look into the killings of three police officers who went to arrest in Taraba state earlier in August.

Recall that some soldiers recently attacked the police officers who went to Taraba to arrest Wadume.

According to Punch, some top military sources said the panel report indicted some army and police officers as well as a few civilians. The sources added that the police and military officers involved in the incident would “going by their level of culpability” either be tried or face dismissal.

Breaking: Tribunal sacks Dino Melaye as Kogi West senator, orders fresh election
Sen. Melaye, who was a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared winner of the February 23 election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) – Vanguard reports.

Dissatisfied by the declaration, Senator Smart Adeyemi, who was the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), approached the tribunal to challenge Melaye's victory, citing, irregularities, over-voting and non compliance with the electoral acts.

The three man panel led by Justice A. O. Chijioke in a unanimous judgment on Friday, August 23, accepted Adeyemi’s ground and ordered for reelection into the senatorial axis.

Reacting to the tribunal's judgement, Melaye who is contesting in the upcoming governorship election in Kogi state said there was no cause for alarm over his sack, adding that his mandate would not be taken from him.

It was reported that the embattled senator said that even if the ruling was in his favour, it would have been appealed.

He insisted that there would be fresh senatorial election in the district and that he would be Kogi's next governor. According to him, he who laughs last laughs long.

Details Of What Nigeria's Secret Police, DSS, Counted Against Sowore

Details Of What Nigeria's Secret Police, DSS, Counted Against Sowore

The Department of State Services (DSS) says it suspected that Omoyele Sowore, a candidate in Nigeria's last presidential election wanted to work with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) to topple the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The federal government had proscribed the two groups, describing them as terrorist organizations.

Sowore is known in Nigeria and around the world as a human rights activist and non-violent agitator for democratic ideals.

He was part of the struggle against military jackboot in Nigeria and has continued to speak against bad governance and oppression in the country.

But the President Buhari regime claimed that his opponent, Sowore, in the February 23 presidential election was working with two terrorist groups to violently topple his government through the #RevolutionNow protest.

The DSS said this in an affidavit attached to its counter-argument against the application of Sowore challenging his detention.

An Abuja federal high court had granted the DSS 45 days to keep Sowore in its custody pending investigation into the allegation of terrorism against him.

Sowore had called for a non-violent nationwide protest scheduled for August 5 but was arrested in his apartment in Lagos on August 3 just before the #RevolutionNow protests kicked off.

The affidavit read: “The respondent./applicant (Sowore) planned to violently change the government through the hashtag RevolutionNow. Therespondent/appellant hid under the cover of call for mass protest with the hashtag RevolutionNow to mislead unsuspecting and innocent members of the public into joining him to topple the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

“In his plot to topple the government, the respondent/applicant held series of meetings with members at a prescribed terrorist organisation, Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) with a view to mobilizing strong forces to realize his agenda at changing the government. The respondent formed an alliance with a fugitive, Nnamdi Kanu, a self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed terrorist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to launch a series of attacks on Nigeria with a view to violently removing the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“After a series of closed-door meetings between the duo in the United States of America, they addressed a press conference wherein they both stated their resolve to form an alliance against the Nigerian government. The duo stated that they have a well-planned strategy to realize their objective, which is toppling the government."

The court document added, “The applicant/respondent is investigating the activities of the respondent /applicant as it relates to a terrorist organisation, IPOB. The facts show a conjecture between the respondent/applicant and IPOB activities.

“There is a need for the applicant/respondent to investigate such reasonable suspicion of the relationship between the respondent/applicant and IPOB. The respondent held series of meetings with some foreign collaborators outside Nigeria including Dubai where millions of dollars were given to him to sponsor a widespread attack on Nigeria with a view to violently removing the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and freeing Ibrahim El-Zakzaky (Sheikh)."

Similarly, the affidavit claimed: “In furtherance to the plans to violently free El-Zakzaky from lawful custody. the respondent held several meetings with a proscribed terrorist organisation. Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) where they strategized on how to carry out attacks to force the government to free Elzakzaky.

“The respondent stated in one of his videos that Shiite members, who are members of the proscribed terrorists group, IMN were going to join forces with him in bringing down the government. The statement and the meetings of the respondent/applicant raise the issue of grave suspicion of supporting a proscribed terrorists’ organisation, IMN.

“The suspicions require diligent investigation by the applicant/respondent. The planned action constitutes a threat of violence to intimidate or cause panic in members of the public as a means of affecting political conduct. The investigation is still ongoing. Upon the completion of the investigation, the case file will be forwarded to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation for advice and possible prosecution.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has denied raiding the residence of the immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, in spite a trending video signifying their presence at his house.

The EFCC, in a statement on its Instagram page on Tuesday said it had been inundated with calls that operatives of the Commission raided the residence of the former governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode.

“The Commission hereby states with high sense of responsibility that the operatives did not raid Ambode’s residence.

“Whatever the Commission is presently doing with regards to the investigation is in line with its mandate and the rule of law.

“We wish to inform the social media to be circumspect in the reportage of any news with regards to investigation activities of the Commission,” the statement said.

“Therefore, the attempt to cast the Commission in a bad light is unacceptable as the EFCC will never engage in illegal act. We remain committed to the war against corruption.”

Iran Calls Us Talks ‘useless’ As It Unveils New Missile

Iran Calls Us Talks ‘useless’ As It Unveils New Missile

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has inducted a locally built air-defence system into the country’s missile defence network at an unveiling ceremony in the capital, Tehran.

The display of the new system, Bavar-373, on Tuesday came amid heightened tensions with the United States, which last year unilaterally withdrew from a multinational nuclear deal signed between world powers and Iran and reimposed crippling sanctions on it. Iranian officials have previously called Bavar, which means “believe” in Farsi, the country’s first domestically produced long-range missile defence system.

Iran Calls Us Talks ‘useless’ As It Unveils New Missile
Iran began production after the purchase of Russia’s S-300 system was suspended in 2010 due to international sanctions that have barred it from importing many weapons. It installed the stalled S-300 system in March 2016 following several years of delays in the wake of the now-crumbling 2015 nuclear deal. Speaking at the ceremony, Rouhani said the mobile surface-to-air system was “better than S-300 and close to [more advanced] S-400.”

With a range of more than 200km, Iran’s official IRNA news agency said the long-range missile system is suited to the country’s geography. In his speech, Rouhani also struck a muscular tone on dealings with the US, saying that “talks are useless” over the nuclear deal. “Now that our enemies do not accept logic, we cannot respond with logic,” Rouhani said. He added: “When the enemy launches a missile against us, we cannot give a speech and say: ‘Mr. Rocket, please do not hit our country and our innocent people. Rocket-launching sir, if you can please hit a button and self-destroy the missile in the air.'

” Iran shot down a US Global Hawk surveillance drone with a surface-to-air missile in June for allegedly violating its airspace, a claim that the US denies. Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif used a positive tone over French proposals to salvage the nuclear deal,  which was signed by France, the United Kingdom, Germany China, Russia and the European Union, in addition to the US. In an effort to prop up the agreement, French President Emmanuel Macron offered on Wednesday to either soften sanctions on Iran or provide a compensation mechanism “to enable the Iranian people to live better” in return for full compliance with the pact.

Speaking at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, Zarif on Thursday said he was looking forward to having a serious conversation during a meeting with Macron in Paris the next day.

“There are proposals on the table, both from the French and the Iranian side, and we are going to work on those proposals tomorrow,” he said. Zarif added, however, Iran would not tolerate US interference in the Gulf, warning against Washington’s efforts to create a security mission to guard shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital gateway for global oil supplies. The UK, Australia and Bahrain are the only countries to have joined the US mission so far. “It’s clear that the US’ intention … (of having a) naval presence in the Persian Gulf is to counter Iran,” Zarif said.

“Don’t expect us to remain quiet when somebody comes to our waters and threatens us.” Suspected attacks on several commercial ships in the Gulf in recent months have heightened turmoil in a region already on edge amid the acrimonious standoff between the US and Iran over the latter’s nuclear programme.

The US has blamed Iran for the suspected attacks on the vessels over Tehran’s denials. In his speech in Oslo, Zarif said Iran would not start a war in the Gulf but it would defend itself. “Will there be a war in the Persian Gulf? I can tell you that we will not start the war … but we will defend ourselves.” Hassan Ahmadian, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Tehran, said the French proposals went beyond the 2015 agreement.

“What we hear is that France wants to discuss Iran’s regional policy and its ballistic missile system as part of the debate over the nuclear deal,” he told Al Jazeera. “Iran in the past rejected discussing these issues with the United States,” he said. “Therefore, it is a long shot for the Iranian strategic community to conclude discussions on these will be beneficial to Iran.”

It would be recalled that Freshreporters News earlier posted that the Supreme Court has Striked Out Atiku, PDP’s Appeal.

As seen on the Party's Handle:- The Case that was determined today by the Justice Dattijio Mohammed led five man panel of the Supreme Court, was an appeal filed by the PDP and Atiku/Obi on a ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal concerning an application made by the APC to withdraw one of the replies made to the Petitioners’ Petition.

The APC had erroneously made two replies to one of PDP and Atiku/Obi’s petitions but later came to the court room and apply to withdraw the very reply the PDP and Atiku/Obi had replied to, thereby adopting the one not replied to.

This request was later granted by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and the PDP and Atiku/Obi had gone to the Supreme Court, seeking the leave of court to grant the party fair hearing.
