Saudi To Unveil 'Evidence' Linking Iran To Attacks As US Weighs Response

Saudi To Unveil 'Evidence' Linking Iran To Attacks As US Weighs Response

Saudi Arabia said it will unveil evidence on Wednesday linking regional foe Iran to attacks on key oil installations, as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo heads to the kingdom to discuss possible retaliation.
Saudi To Unveil 'Evidence' Linking Iran To Attacks As US Weighs Response

Riyadh, which is bogged down in a five-year war against Tehran-aligned rebels in neighbouring Yemen, has said that the weapons used in the strikes were Iranian-made, but has so far not directly blamed its arch rival.

However, the Saudi defence ministry said its spokesman would present evidence from the site of the weekend attacks that halved Saudi oil production, sending global energy markets into a tailspin.
He "will announce the final results of the investigation and present material evidence and Iranian weapons proving the Iranian regime's involvement in the terrorist attack," the ministry said.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler, on Wednesday said the attack on the heart of the kingdom's oil industry was a "real test" of global will, while urging the international community to take a "firm stance", state media reported.
Saudi To Unveil 'Evidence' Linking Iran To Attacks As US Weighs Response
Late Tuesday, Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said international investigators, including from the UN, were joining the probe, having announced that output would return to normal by the end of the month.

The kingdom wants "proof based on professionalism and internationally recognised standards," he said.
The Saudis will present the evidence ahead of Pompeo's arrival.
The US chief diplomat is set to meet with Prince Mohammed to discuss how to respond to the strikes, which the US says originated in Iran.

"As the president said, we don't want war with anybody, but the United States is prepared," Vice President Mike Pence said in a speech in Washington on Tuesday.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that the administration has concluded that the attack involved cruise missiles from Iran and that evidence would be presented at the UN General Assembly next week.

- Prefer not to meet -

The apparent hardening of the US position came as Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ruled out negotiations with Washington "at any level".
This appeared to nix remaining hopes for a dramatic meeting between President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani at the United Nations next week.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One over California, Trump said he too had cooled on what had always seemed to be a diplomatic longshot.

"I never rule anything out, but I prefer not meeting him," Trump said.

Yemen's Huthi rebels claimed responsibility for Saturday's oil installation attacks, which took out six percent of global supplies.
But a senior US administration official cast doubt on that claim, saying that while the Huthis said they used 10 drones, one Saudi oil facility was hit "at least 17 times," and another twice by "precision-guided munitions."

Additionally, neither the type of drone "nor the cruise missiles employed in the attack can reach the facilities from Yemen. It's not possible," the official said.

Observers say the torrid experience in Yemen, where despite their vast firepower, the Saudis have failed to subdue the ragtag but highly motivated militia, has made Riyadh circumspect about wading into another conflict.

"I certainly hope we're not (going to have another war)," Riyadh's ambassador to London Prince Khalid bin Bandar told the BBC in an interview.

"Almost certainly it's Iranian-backed, but we are trying not to react too quickly because the last thing we need is more conflict in the region," he said.

Iran has stuck with its account that the Huthi rebels are responsible, with Rouhani saying Wednesday that they carried out the strike as a "warning" about a possible wider war in response to the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen.

State media said Tehran had written to Washington through the Swiss embassy on Monday denying any role in attacks on Saudi oil installations and warning it would respond to any action.

The message "emphasised that if any actions are taken against Iran, that action will face an immediate response from Iran and its scope will not be limited to just a threat," the official IRNA news agency said.

Operatives of the Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested three men in Uyo the Akwa Ibom State Capital, for allegedly impersonating operatives of both the Economic and financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC. The arrested suspects are Norbert Rampa, 51; Patrick Essien, 50; and Gabriel Daniel, 32.

Rampa, Essien and Daniel, along with other members of their team had paid a courtesy visit to the Commissions office in Uyo, on September 19, 2018, under the Grassroot Development Advocacy Initiative (GDAI) which they claim was a registered organisation, under the auspices of National Anti-corruption Coalition (NACC).

During that visit, their National Director, Essien, spoke extensively on the several trainings that their members had gone through to ensure grassroot engagements in budget processes, aimed at sustaining the fight against corruption. Rampa who introduced himself as the Director of programmes emphasised on their 'robust' collaboration with the ICPC, with an unsettling request that they be granted operational powers, to which the zonal head refused and advised them to report all perceived corrupt practices to the Commission.

But the team paid no heed to that advice as some of its top ranking members embarked on various levels of forgery and impersonation to facilitate their criminal activities which must have been going on for years under the guise of 'Grassroot Initiative'.

The modus operandi of this criminal extortion is purely hinged on intimidation of innocent persons and extortion of same under the pretext that they were in an operational joint tax force of both the EFCC and the ICPC. But they ran out of luck when they picked on one Aloysius Udobong, an elderly retiree for their game of intimidation and extortion.

When they initiated their move to intimidate and extort Udobong but could not, they decided to send in a fictitious petition against him to the EFCC, with well concocted claims that he was a corrupt retired public servant.

When Udobong was invited for questioning, he volunteered his statement against the 'Grassroot' trio, with documented evidence of their forgeries and false claims which instantly turned the table against them as they automatically became the suspects.

According to Udobong, sometime in 2018, the syndicate issued him a letter of investigation purportedly emanating from the EFCC and attempted to extort him, but when they discovered that he wasn't willing to comply with their financial demands, they left. But returned again to his residence in 2019 with more letters this time, showing details of all his assets and properties, threatening to prosecute him unless he "settled" them.

After his statement had been taken, Mr. Udobong also presented some of the various invitation/investigation letters which he claimed were personally delivered to him by Rampa. On seeing the forged letters, operatives of the Commission decided to carry out a search of their various apartments. The outcome of that search completely established the fact that Rampa, Essien and Daniel, had been impersonating the EFCC and ICPC in the state and beyond.

Some of the forged documents recovered from their apartments include: forged EFCC letter-headed papers; ICPC operational jackets; forged Identity cards of National Anti-corruption Coalition of ICPC/EFCC Partnership; various forged letters to individuals and organisations purportedly coming from EFCC and ICPC; forged investigation letters to First Bank of Nigeria; handwritten drafts of fake petitions against individuals; forged investigation letters from the suspects to the complainant Mr. Udobong and a Desktop computer.

Other forged items recovered include a fake letter headed paper clearly written: 'a national anti-corruption coalition (NACC) of ICPC/EFCC partnership, that captured Rampa as 'Head, Intelligence Investigator/Operations', a forged EFCC letter headed paper with the Commission's logo on the left hand side and the coat of arms on the right hand side and forged identity cards.

The trio were arrested on Friday, September 13, 2019, by operatives of the Commission in Uyo and are currently providing useful information. They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

It was furthermore understood that climate change-powered natural disasters drove 7million people out of their homes.

“These figures are alarmingly high, particularly as we are only half way through the year.

They show that the causes of conflict and inequality are not being addressed, and that displacement is creating cyclical patterns of crisis and vulnerability,” Alexandra Bilak, IDMC’s director said in a statement.

IMN Alleges 15 Shi’ites Killed, Police Say 64 Arrested

IMN Alleges 15 Shi’ites Killed, Police Say 64 Arrested

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria on Tuesday said   15 of its members were killed across the country by the police while observing the Ashura procession.
The IMN stated that its members were allegedly killed during the procession in Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Sokoto and Katsina states.
The President of the IMN Media Forum, Ibrahim Musa, explained in a statement that three Shi’ites were allegedly killed in Kaduna and 10 injured, while three others were  killed in Azare, Bauchi State.
IMN Alleges 15 Shi’ites Killed, Police Say 64 Arrested

He said, “At least, three people were confirmed killed by the police in Kaduna and 10 others injured, some fatally, when thousands of Muslim brothers and sisters trooped out in the early hours of Tuesday commemorating the tragic events of Ashura.
“In Bauchi,  three persons were killed during the Ashura procession when the police attacked the mourners. Likewise, three others were killed by the police in Azare, also in Bauchi State. Another three persons were killed by the police in Gombe, Gombe State.”

The statement further said one person was reportedly killed in Illela, while another individual was killed in Goronyo, both in Sokoto State.

It added that an IMN member was also murdered in Malumfashi, Katsina State, noting that several people sustained bullet wounds when the police allegedly shot the mourners, “not only during the procession, but afterwards as the well armed policemen attempted to forcibly make their way into the Islamic centre of the movement.”
The sect said the figures could rise due to the fatal gunshot wounds sustained by some mourners.
It stated that the procession was peaceful in Abuja, Jos, Kebbi, Minna, Lafia, Yola, Gusau, Zaria, Kano, Jalingo, Damaturu, Hadejia and Potiskum.

“That the mourning procession ended peacefully in places not attacked by the police is sufficient evidence as to who the instigators of violence are whenever we are carrying out our legitimate religious duties,” Musa said.

The force spokesman, Frank Mba, declined to comment, saying inquiries about the alleged attacks should be directed to the public relations officers of the respective commands where the incidents occurred.

Only non-IMN members free to observe Ashura mourning ritual – Police

But later on Tuesday, The Nigeria Police Force said  Muslims in the country were free to observe the Ashura mourning procession, adding that its ban only applied to the proscribed IMN.

Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. It marks the day that Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, was martyred in the Battle of Karbala.

Mba said those marking the religious ceremony should, however, do so within the confines of the law.
He said in a statement,  “Muslims marking the commemoration of Ashura throughout the country along with other Muslims across the world are free to carry out the annual Ashura procession.
“They should, however, do so within the confines of the law and guard against infiltration by unscrupulous elements who may want to take advantage of the event to cause disruption of public peace, order and security.
Mba explained that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had directed all commissioners of police and their respective supervisory assistant inspectors-general of police in commands and zones to give “full effect to the above clarifications and ensure that non-IMN Muslims are not in any way restricted from exercising their freedom of religion, worship and peaceful assembly.”

He said  the IG had enjoined members of the public to be calm and go about their business “as the force is doing all within its capacity to ensure there is no breach of the peace, law and order anywhere in the country.”

We dispersed hoodlums, nobody was killed – Kaduna command

But in Kaduna State,  Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Yakubu Sabo,  said nobody was killed in the IMN event. He described the claim by IMN  as “a blatant lie.”

The spokesman told one of our correspondents on the telephone that the police dispersed Shi’ites mourners successfully.

He added that the IMN had been proscribed and that it would not be’ allowed to observe any procession.
Sabo said,  “It’s a blatant lie. The police didn’t kill anybody.  Police only dispersed some hoodlums that were sighted along Bakin-Ruwa, staging a protest.
“If you remember, we came out with a warning yesterday that the  IMN had been proscribed both by the federal and the Kaduna State governments.
“So, when we received information that they were going to stage a protest today (Tuesday), we warned them not to come out because police would not allow anybody under any guise to stage any protest.

“But some of them refused to heed  the warning. We received information this morning that some  of them were sighted along Bakin Ruwa and our men went and dispersed them successfully.

“There was no report of any casualties. That was what they had been looking for ;  to come out and when police dispersed them, they would be making frivolous claims. It has been their tradition.”

Meanwhile, there was tension in the state capital over the Ashura processions as residents feared a clash between  the IMN and the police was imminent.

Our correspondent who went round the city observed that at about 9.50am a police truck was  at the Katsina Road roundabout.
Also at the Leventis Roundabout, four operational vehicles of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force and the state security outfit code-named Operation Yaki were there.

Though there was a free flow of traffic,  few commercial vehicles were on the road.   Commercial activities were also low as few shops were  opened.

We arrested 28 Shi’ites in Bauchi – Police

In Bauchi, the Bauchi State capital, there was tension as many scampered for safety when the police and Shi’ites clashed.

The clash occurred at about 10am at the Central Market Roundabout and Tashan Babiye areas of Bauchi.

The police fired canisters of tear gas to disperse the protesters even as guns were also said to have been fired by the police causing people to scamper for safety. Most shops in the  Central Market were shut as traders ran for their lives.

An eyewitness,  who spoke to The our source on condition of  anonymity, said, “Early in the morning, the Shi’ites gathered to embark on their usual procession, but the police blocked the road and fired teargas to disperse them.”

Another eyewitness and Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Bauchi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Mallam-Goje, told The PUNCH  correspondent that he affected by the teargas canisters that were fired by the police around Tashan Babiye and Bakin Kura area.

“Actually, I came out from my house and was on my way to the office this morning when I saw members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria who were carrying out their procession,” she said

The state police command said that it had arrested 28 members of the IMN in Bauchi.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state,  Kamal Abubakar, said that the police had warned the Shi’ites not to come out for their procession, but they defied the order.

He said that only “minimal force” was used to disperse the protesters even as he said there was no record of any casualty from the clash.

Abubakar said, “Prior to this day and to ensure that the relative peace being enjoyed in the state was maintained, we asked the traditional rulers to warn the Shi’ites not to come out for this procession today, but they defied the advice of the traditional rulers and came out.”

Asked to comment on reports that police fired bullets and tear gas canisters to disperse the Shi’ites, the PPRO  said, “All I can tell you is that we arrested 28 people and it was a minimal  force that was used. And when I say minimal force it doesn’t mean that bullets were used.”

Kano Shi’ites stay indoors

In Kano,  many members of the IMN stayed indoors.  A few sect members were seen at Kurna Asabe in Kano, but  when they saw policemen, they fled.

A member of the IMN in Kano, who spoke with journalists, on condition of anonymity, said, “We came out, as early as 6am and concluded our activities within few minutes so as to avoid casualties.’’

In Katsina,  there were few  commercial activities around the residence of  the state leader of   the IMN, Mallam Yakubu Katsina,   as residents and shop owners in the area were afraid of a likely clash between members of the sect and the police.

But the majority of members of the sect, however, observed the annual Ashura celebration in their individual homes .

Katsina himself said, “We did not plan to disrupt the peace in the state. We only went out to observe our procession and prayed for peace to reign in the country, unknown to us they (security agents) had a plan against us”

Police patrol teams were also seen on major streets in Katsina, including Kofar Kaora,  Sabo Kasuwa Sabo line and Kofar Marusa.

Trading in  the nearby Kofar Marusa market was also low  as many shop  owners did not open for business until about 4pm.

Katsina police arrest 36 members

The state police command on Tuesday evening said it had arrested 36 members of the IMN. The command said the arrests were made in Katsina, Malumfashi and Dutsinma.

A statement by the command’s spokesman,  Gambo Isah, stated that an unnamed police officer was ‘seriously injured’ by members of the group in the Malumfashi Local Government Area of the state.

The statement stated, ”In compliance with the Federal Government directives on the proscription of Islamic Movement of Nigeria, the Katsina State Police Command has put in place stringent security measures to deal decisively with the defiant members of the proscribed group .
“The command will not fold its arms and watch  violent  protests being carried out by the  group. Consequently, the command has succeeded in arresting 36 members of the proscribed El-Zakzaki- led IMN embarking on a protest in furtherance of terrorism. One police officer was seriously injured by the group at the Malumfashi LGA. Suspects will be arraigned  immediately investigations are completed.”

Two Alleged Killers Of Former Rwandan Intelligence Head To Be Arrested

Two Alleged Killers Of Former Rwandan Intelligence Head To Be Arrested

Two Alleged Killers Of Former Rwandan Intelligence Head To Be Arrested

Colonel Patrick Karegeya sought asylum in South Africa in 2008 after he had a fallout with the Rwandan government.

Lobby group AfriForum said it had been informed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) that it had issued warrants of arrest for two of the four alleged murderers of former Rwandan head of intelligence Colonel Patrick Karegeya.

In a statement issued on Monday, head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, Gerrie Nel said the NPA was in the process of applying for the extradition of Ismael Gafaranga and Alex Sugira.

“As soon as the extradition request is granted, the NPA will apply to Interpol for the issuing of so-called ‘Red Notices’ for the suspects.”

Nel described the latest development as a “victory”.

However, it is also an indication that the NPA has abused the legal system, as warrants for arrest were issued without any further investigation.

“This after the NPA indicated that they could not make a decision to prosecute on the available evidence and recommended a judicial inquest.

“We welcome the current steps and hope that the NPA will continue with the process keenly. AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit and the family of the deceased will closely monitor the process.”

In April, the Randburg Magistrate’s Court referred the murder case back to the NPA to decide whether they would prosecute those suspected of being responsible for Karegeya’s death.

Karegeya sought asylum in South Africa in 2008 after he had a fallout with the Rwandan government and set up an opposition movement called the Rwandan National Congress.

He was found dead in a hotel room at Michelangelo Towers in Sandton, Johannesburg, in 2013.

The inquest into Karegeya’s murder was previously set aside after Nel, on behalf of Karegeya family, brought forward an application arguing that the inquest was “an abuse of process” and a means for the police and the NPA to cover up their inaction, because an investigation which already identified the suspects had already taken place, News24 earlier reported.

(Video) 49-Year-Old Stepfather Rapes Girl, Preps Her For Porn Film, Prostitution In Italy

Police Command in Edo state, Nigeria has arrested a 49-year-old man simply identified as Mr Raphael, for repeatedly raping his 15-year-old stepdaughter with the approval of the victim’s mother who is his lover.

Activist Harrison Gwamnishu who shared the story on his Facebook page, said the victim stated that she was molested by her stepfather and physically assaulted by him and her mum whenever she refused to have sex.

According to the victim, her mum and her stepfather agreed that the man would continually have sex with her in the bid to widen her vagina in preparation to send her abroad for prostitution and child pornography.

When interrogated, the victim said her stepfather had sex with her about three times now and had perfected plans with her mum to take her down to Lagos for them to feature in a pornographic film after which she would be flown to Italy to engage in prostitution.

Harrison said the suspect Mr Raphael was eventually apprehended and detained but would be transferred to SCID Benin for further investigation and prosecution.
