The "repel molester" feature was added a few months after the launch which victims of molestation can activate the application it will shout "stop it" at its highest volume or produce a full-screen emergency message which the victims can show to others. The emergency message reads, "There is a molester. Please help."
The app has been downloaded very much now with an "unusually high figure" for a public service app, police official Keiko Toyamine told news agency AFP.

The police official further said that the downloads are increasing by some 10,000 every month.
Women are often too scared to call for help when they are being harassed and this emergency message mode helps them "notify other passengers about groping while remaining silent."

According to the latest available data from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, nearly 900 groping and other harassment cases were reported on Tokyo trains and subways in 2017. Toyamine added that it is only the tip of the iceberg as many hesitate to report the crime.

An expert says that the app could be a boon for "silent" crime.

Akiyoshi Saito, a certified social worker who supported some 800 former molesters during a rehabilitation programme, said, "Molesters tend to target those who appear shy and reluctant to lodge a police complaint."

A senior official from the Metropolitan Police Department said: "I hope more people will download the renewed app to prevent as many crime victims as possible."
